Greece Trip: Santorini

While we were in Greece last October visiting my boyfriends family in Athens, we got the chance to leave for a long weekend and go to the island of Santorini for a little romantic getaway.

Let me tell you, if you ever get the chance to go to Santorini, please go. It is probably the most beautiful and amazing place I have been in the world so far, and Im not sure anywhere I go in the future will beat it. The special thing about Santorini is that there are more churches on the island than there are homes. This is how they got electricity throughout the island, because they needed it for the churches.

Santorini Reflexions Volcano – We stayed right on the cliff in Thira, which is the less touristy side of the island. The people at this hotel were so great, [much like most people we met in Greece in general] the lady that checked us in had all the activities we could do and set them all up for us at no extra cost.

EcoBikes  – The first day [we got lost] and eventually rented electric bicycles from two locals both named Dimitri. They gave us the option to take the bikes out on our own or go on a 3-4 hour tour with them. My boyfriend convinced me that we should go with them, which I was a little hesitant of at first, but I am so glad we decided to go with them. These guys took us through an old pirate castle that is now a hotel. They took us up the cliff to the heart of Santorini so we could see the ocean below us, which was so breathtaking. They were so nice and would stop and take photos of us so we could both be in them and they told us all about the island and the culture. I would recommend them in a heart beat.

Catamaran Caldera Gold – The next day we took a 5-hour daytime cruise around the island on a catamaran. This trip was incredible. The crew members were so fun and engaging, the food the cooked up for us was like a Greek feast and the wine and beer were unlimited. We sailed to the hot springs and had some time to jump into the [freezing cold, not hot] water and swim around. We had so much fun talking with the others on the boat and had a great time.

The whole cliffside had restaurants all up and down mixed with little souvenir shops. We spent the last day just being tourists and buying gifts for friends and family. If you have ever heard that Santorini has the most beautiful sunsets in the world, I can tell you, it’s probably true. It was mostly overcast the whole time we were there, but even then, the sunsets were magical and so beautiful.
